Handlebar Moustache Survey by M of Pennsylvania

  1. How long have you had a handlebar moustache, and what is your history with moustaches?

I’ve been sporting a handlebar with a slight trimmed beard for about 10 months. I’ve previously had a neatly cropped beard with a slight chevron for a couple years.

  1. What moved you to grow a handlebar moustache? Do any relatives or ancestors have handlebar moustaches?

I was initially just curious if I could grow out a decent one. I’ve long thought about it but was always worried I wouldn’t have proper hair growth for a good one. My father had a chevron for my entire life and we look very similar.

  1. What are some of the reactions of others as you grew your handlebar moustache? What sort of reactions or comments did you get initially from your significant other?

handlebar moustacheI initially received a good deal of derision from people while the initial growing was occurring, there is a few weeks to months that are a bit messy. Mostly it seemed that I got chided for wanting to be a hipster but that changed dramatically as it grew in. My wife was always very supportive and continues to be, she has remarked to me many times that I can grow it out as large and weird as I want and she will be happy with it.

  1. What are some of the funny or strange comments others have made about your handlebar moustache over time?

Most common is that I look like an old timey strongman, though I’ve gotten a leprechaun comment once (thanks red hair). Mostly I get compliments, and quite a lot of them.

  1. Has having a handlebar moustache had any effects on your personality/behavior, attitude, self-expression and sense of self?

I don’t think it has but I’ve noticed that people question me a great deal less. So there’s some ease in life that has perceivably come from it, which has increased my swagger a bit.

  1. What is it in your personality that drew you to growing a handlebar moustache?

Mostly curiosity and the thought that I could totally pull this off and make it look dapper.

  1. Have you been in any moustache contests or attended any such gatherings?

No, and I would rather not

  1. It takes courage to wear a handlebar moustache. What would you say to those who think you look odd, silly or stupid with it?

I’ve mostly gotten compliments though there are the rare occasions where someone tells me it’s silly. I pay them no mind. My mustache is glorious.

  1. What waxes, styling aids or glues to you prefer and why?

I have a very wiry and pronounced handlebar that does not tame well. Without wax I can be a ginger Sam Elliot. I currently use Can You Handlebar Primary and Secondary Wax. Initially I tried a few other brands but I settled on this one. The Primary is good at controlling the mid-section where movement of my mouth can be more pronounced. The Secondary give my curls the strength to stay up and proud all day long. I would very much recommend this brand.

  1. What do you think a handlebar moustache does for a man?

In general it seems to invoke an image of quiet confidence and wisdom. If you are lucky enough to be able to grow and groom a good handlebar, you will find a level of inherent respect and appreciation that you would not expect.

  1. How attached are you to your handlebar moustache and what would it take for you to cut it off or remove the curls and not grow it back?

In all honestly it may eventually go from boredom, I now know that I can easily grow it back out again and it will look good.

  1. Have you accumulated any moustached merchandise, shirts, mugs or other stuff?

My wife bought me a whisker dam for Christmas, it’s a small copper plate that attaches to my beer glass so my mustache doesn’t get wet. I don’t use it often but there are occasions where foamy beer makes it necessary.

  1. Can you recommend some other moustache web sites?

  1. All about color How closely does your moustache match the color of the hair on your head? How many colors are in your moustache? Do you like its color? Have you ever dyed it?

My mustache is the exact same color as the hair on my head and the rest of my body. I’m a bright orange ginger; there really isn’t any variation in my hair anywhere.

  1. What would you like to see on handlebarmoustachelife.com?

I can’t think of anything

  1. How has having a handlebar moustache affected your love life, dating, and does it interfere with kissing?

My wife loves it for the most part and it hasn’t impacted kissing. Though there is one thing in bed we aren’t really able to do anymore unfortunately.

  1. What do you do for a living and what impact do you think your handlebar moustache has with customers, coworkers and superiors?

I work in IT. There hasn’t been all that much change but it does seem like I get a little bit more confidence and respect from management. Customers are a rarity but when talking with them I get immediate acceptance, like this guy won’t do you wrong kind of thing.

  1. Does your handlebar moustache give you any superpowers?

I can give a suspicious side eye like no other

  1. Eating – neatly – can be a challenge with a larger moustache. Do you have any eating tips, or stories to share? Have you been tempted to remove the HB due to eating issues?

Eating and drinking are mostly ok. Sandwiches and burritos can be a little bit of a challenge if I don’t want to floss with my own hair, but can be remedied by waxing the hair just at the rim of my lips out(this also makes for excellent guide wires for the rest my stache). The worst has to be when eating noodle soups like ramen, the broth is too hot and will melt the wax causing me to restyle it afterwards.

  1. Have you ever styled your mustache in a comical manner or specifically for a Halloween costume?

  1. What is your preferred style for your handlebar moustache, and do you do a variety of styles?

I sport a classical large handlebar but also keep a very short beard, I don’t experiment much but I’ve done the Dali-esque straight pull up when playing a bit.

  1. Would you share your location and / or your age?
